The Centre moves to Perth, January 2021

In January 2021 we moved to Perth, where the Centre would continue to run classes, if at first entirely online. Previously the Centre had used Skype for online teaching, but on 2 February Zongmin Chen held an online session with continuing Darwin students to introduce them to Zoom, which she has been using ever since to reach students in Darwin, Brisbane and Melbourne. The following picture shows Zongmin holding an online class in her study.

The development of local face-to-face classes in Perth has been proceeding slowly.

Believing in early literacy, by mid 2021 Zongmin had begun to hold regular classes for her two grandsons, ages 4 and 5. She started by introducing them to Chinese characters that originated as pictures of things, such as those for the sun and moon. As the classes continued she introduced about five new characters at each session, soon adding a short reading, Chinese bingo games of the sort you see the boys playing in the preceding picture, sometimes a card game involving matching radical with the remainders of characters, and often ending off with a Chinese children's story from Youtube. Initially the younger boy actually became better at reading Chinese than English, although his English reading surpassed his Chinese in his pre-primary year. By October 2022 the boys had studied about four hundred characters, with the older boy being much better at remembering them than the younger.

On 11 February 2022 Zongmin began another face-to-face local class for somewhat older children.
